In 1982, José Carlos Calheiros Cruz, from a family of Douro winegrowers, revived the family tradition and built a modern winemaking centre in Régua, in the Douro Demarcated Region. In 1985, he ventured into bottled wine production with the ambition of making his mark on the wine market and bringing the Douro to the world.
In 2001, with the support of acclaimed oenologist Anselmo Mendes, his work began to receive international recognition, and Adega Calheiros Cruz was named "Winery of the Year" by America's "Wine & Spirits" magazine.
Following the death of her husband José Carlos in 2002, Madalena Calheiros Cruz took over the leadership of the company, continuing her husband's passion and working with the same values and goals.
