A vineyard over 80 years old, with several gaps due to partial abandonment for some years. In an area of intense exposure and with enormous schist outcrops on the surface where not a single blade of grass subsists. The people of the Quinta quickly nicknamed it "Vinha do Abandonado" (Abandoned Vineyard).
For years they tried to restore the vineyard and replant the missing vines. Until they gave up. Despite all the care, only the oldest vines were able to survive in such extreme conditions. In 2004, they decided to isolate it for the first time in the Quinta da Gaivosa winery. It immediately revealed a unique personality and character. They decided to bottle it in homage to the equally unique old vineyards of the Douro, which will one day disappear.
Deep ruby colour. Great complexity and aromatic freshness, with unusual balsamic and tar notes, liquorice and black fruits, typical of the Abandonado vineyard. A harmonious palate, with intensity, but also delicacy, minerality, and an extraordinary purity of fruit. You can taste the schist soils, the surrounding forest, the freshness of the altitude, in a pure expression of the vineyard's nature. An exercise in pure elegance and class from one of the most iconic vineyards in the Douro and Portugal.
